Junior Football Championship: Athlone 0-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-6

Athlone powered by the experienced quartet of Andrew Lynam, Fergal Murray, Darren Magee and Emmet Collins were worthy winners of this junior football championship tie played in Ballymore on Monday. Athlone held an interval lead of 0-7 to 0-3 thanks mainly to some fine scores kicked by Costello and some bad misses by the Mullingar Shamrocks forwards. Ross Corroon, Zach Aherne and Trevor Keena kicked the Shamrocks points.

After the interval the teams shared four points with Ross Corroon responsible for the Shamrocks points. Ross with perceptive passes created two great goal scoring opportunities at this early stage of the half but great saves from Cathal Joyce on both occasions denied Shamrocks the scores that might have made the difference. Athlone were comfortable for the remainder of the half and led by 0-13 to 0-6 as the game entered the final stages. Finally a snap shot from Zach Aherne zipped past Joyce but it was too little too late; Athlone added a final point to secure the championship points in what was a disappointing weekend for Mullingar Shamrocks in adult championship football.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Seán Hynes; Daniel Chukwuemeka (Mark Flynn), Matthew Siode, Emmet Walsh; Davy Coyne, Nathan Smith, Ryan Blundell; Pearse Corroon, Dillon Matthews (Alan Cashman); Zach Aherne (1-1), Kenneth O'Reilly, John O'Reilly (Andrew Shaw), Trevor Keena (0-1), Ciarán Curley (Gary Corroon), Ross Corroon (0-4).
