Everybody else is doing it why can't we?

As the football world mourns the loss of Jack Charlton the coincidence between Jack's era in charge of the Republic of Ireland and Mullingar Shamrocks Golden Age is worth noting. They coincided exactly.

If the Irish nation had Big Jack we had Big Tom who was the midfield king of Westmeath football of the era. Big Jack's first match in charge in Dublin came shortly after the 1986 county title and this proved to be the first of seven senior county titles won over the next decade. We had to settle for the county intermediate title as our Euro 88 equivalent. The year of Italia 90 saw Shamrocks and Ritchie's Army collect the third title; the year of USA 94 saw Mullingar Shamrocks complete a three-in-row, the four-in-a-row was landed in 1995, the year that Big Jack steeped down.

Ritchie stepped down in 1994 and like all successful managers himself and Big Jack shared common characteristics: both had very definite ideas on how a winning game plan was formulated, both placed their trust in a key group of core players and some talented individuals unable to conform to the tactical requirements missed out.

And if Mick Byrne was a much loved physio in the Irish setup we had our own Byrne in charge of fixing muscle strains ... the great Eamonn Killer Byrne.

Great Years and Great Success. And Mullingar Shamrocks had plenty of songs to sing too ...
