Under-20 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 3-11 St Loman’s 0-6.

After an even first half Mullingar Shamrocks dominated the second half and were worthy 3-11 to 0-6 winners in this latest championship encounter with the neighbours in Lakepoint Park. St Loman’s began impressively and Jack McCann scored directly from the throw-in. Two minutes later Dónall McCann added a second point. After ten minutes, Ted Aherne, the star of the show, finally pointed for Shamrocks after Adam Glynn had surged upfield; two minutes later Ted added a second point. In between a glorious Ryan Kelly pass shredded the Loman’s defence but the goal scoring opportunity was fumbled. Beau Green added to St Loman’s total before a great Ted Aherne pass set up Ryan Kelly who was fouled. Gavin Pierce pointed the resultant free and a replica play between Ryan and Ted ended with another foul, this time on Ryan who popped over the resultant free. Jack McCann completed the first half scoring and at the interval the scoreboard read 0-4 each.  The enhanced rules don’t always lead to a scoring feast.

After a scoreless ten minutes, Mullingar Shamrocks engaged in a scoring blitz that ended the game as a contest in a matter of minutes. It began with a great Ben McNamee turnover deep in his own corner-back post; Ben burst upfield before paring to Callum Rigney who ran through the middle before parting to Ryan Kelly who blasted to the net. Another Adam Glynn up-field surge ended with an offload to Ted Aherne who pointed for the third time. Criostóir Ormsby, in great form following his long injury induced lay off, won possession from the restart and parted to Ted Aherne who pointed again. Rory McCaul intercepted the resultant restart and planted the ball in the back of the St Loman’s net to make the score 2-6 to 0-4. Another Adam Glynn gallop upfield ended with a Callum Rigney point that was followed by a Criostóir Ormsby goal. Gavin Pierce pointed before  Dónall McCann pointed a St Loman’s free in the 27th minute – unbelievably this was St Loman’s first point of the half. Gavin Pierce launched a missile from close to the sideline that soared between the posts for the first two-pointer and the best individual score of the evening.  Dónall McCann again pointed a free before Ted Aherne appropriately completed the scoring with another superb point.
