The Busy Weekend

For 36 hours last weekend Springfield was as busy as it has ever been with events catering for a wide spectrum of the club’s community. Apart from the Feis Cup final there was coaching, fun runs and a minor league match.

Saturday Morning Coaching

The response to our under-age coaching has been superb this year and there was a real feel-good atmosphere in the air in Springfield on Saturday morning. Despite the many who were unable to be present because of the annual Confirmation ceremonies well over 100 young people togged out on for their weekly football coaching and Gaelic football games. It was heartening to see so many current players and past playing legends of the club passing on their wisdom to the stars of the future.  These sessions take place every Saturday morning between 10.30 and 12.00 and all are welcome. Registration can take place on any Saturday morning.

5K Run

It was back to Springfield early on Sunday morning for the club’s 5K Run. Adrian Buckley and his team of helpers did a superb job of organising the event and were rewarded by a fine turnout of mainly Shamrocks club members and supporters. It was promoted as a family fun event and so it proved to be. It was great to see the number of families who were out early on Sunday and in particular the number of young people who indulged in some healthy exercise. Professor Donal O’Shea would approve.  Four first prizes were on offer and were won by Pauric Brady (men), Rachael Cornally (women), Oliver McNamara (Under-17 Boys) and Saoirse Sheridan (Under-17 Girls) Detailed results are available on the Mullingar Shamrocks Facebook page.

Minor Football League

The runners had hardly departed when the Mullingar Shamrocks minor footballers took centre stage for their seasonal debut against Shannon Gaels which turned out to be a losing one (3-13 to 0-10). A bit of ring rustiness put paid to our chances on this occasion and after 10 minutes Shamrocks had fallen behind 2-1 to 0-0. There was no way back from this false start but there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game: the team battled to the end, twenty-one players were given some game time, 0-10 on the scoreboard was an acceptable return and there were some fine individual performances by Killian White, Cormac Murphy, the high fielding D. J. Fedronas, Kenneth O’Reilly and Ross Corroon.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White; Cormac Murphy, Christy Fox, Daragh White; Andrew Connaughton, Sam Gilmartin, Conor McKenna; Ross Corroon (0 -4) and D. J. Fedronas (0-1); Matthew Willoughby, Kenneth O’Reilly (0 -3), Cian Roe; Cathal Crowley, Cory Coyne and Gavin Flanagan.
