Clarke’s Bar Junior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-17 Casledaly 2-8

Plenty of scores characterised this undercard to Saturday night’s main event when the two square off in the first round of the senior championship in Cusack Park. This episode was largely uncompetitive as Shamrocks emerged as easy winners after scoring 2-2 in the opening six minutes. Highlights of the match from a Shamrocks perspective were the return to competitive action of Simon Quinn after a long sabbatical and of Jordan Warde following his recent concussion injury;  Dillon Matthews two goals and in particular his second effort where he showed tremendous pace to zip through the heart of the Castledaly defence; a superb Ross Corroon (who finished the night in goal – could Ross be the next outfield player to convert to net minding duty?) point scored from out near the sideline at The Clubhouse and a rocket of a shot from Pádraig McKenna to score Shamrocks fourth goal with tremendous power generated from very little leg movement.

It will be very different on Saturday evening in Cusack Park.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Robbie Boyle (Sean Wylie); Ryan Blundell, Mark Butler, Eamonn Breslin; Pearse Corroon (0-2), James Grogan, Marc Eivers; Alan Cashman (0-3) and Simon Quinn (1-3); Ross Corroon (0-2), Dillon Matthews [2-0] (Gary Corroon), Conor Twomey; Jordan Warde (Darren Keena 0-3), Ciarán Curley [0-3] (Pádraig McKenna 2-0) Kenneth O’Reilly [0-1] (Cian Roe).
