Junior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-11 St Loman’s 6-6

Goals win matches according to one of the oldest proverbs in the GAA Book of Ancient Wisdom. It’s validity was underlined once again in Springfield on Sunday afternoon as Mullingar Shamrocks and St Loman’s recorded twelve scores each but six of the Lakepoint Park boys’ scores were big pointers and consequently the visitors enjoyed a comfortable victory in this junior championship match. The early exchanges were even with both sides wasting scoring opportunities. However, on ten minutes, St Loman’s added a goal to an earlier point. Alan Cashman opened the scoring for the home side on fifteen minutes with a wind-assisted 45. St Lomans answered immediately with an easily converted free from Gareth Hickey. As the game moved into the final ten minutes of the half, Shamrocks began to assert themselves and 45 from Ross Corroon followed by a free from Dean Moore closed the gap. St Loman’s raised the tempo and burst through for goals on the 25th and 26th minutes. Two points from Alan Cashman and Darren Keena brought the score at the break to 3-2 to 0- 5 in favour of St Loman’s. Shamrocks made some positional switches on the restart. However, these changes failed to stem the flow of goals with St Loman’s slotting home their fourth within three minutes.  Two minutes later, Shamrocks had their only goal of the day when Dean Moore converted a penalty. That was as close as they got with points shared over the following ten. In a four- minute spell from 21st to 25th minutes  St Loman’s added two more goals and a point to kill off the game. A well - taken point in injury time from Dean Moore, brought this below-par performance to an end.
