Ted Webb Title for Westmeath Under-16 Footballers
Congratulations to Westmeathgaaofficial on a great victory in the Ted Webb Cup final today in the Dawn Meats Ballyhaunis GAA ground on what was the 50th Anniversary of the death of the Mayo and Ballyhaunis footballer.
This was Westmeath's first victory in the Under-16 competition. On this occasion Cork White were defeated 3-16 to 2-15 after extra time.
Westmeath overturned a seven point deficit to draw level in normal time and completed the task in the extra-time. Mullingar Shamrocks were well represented on this team: Tom McCaul was of course the goalkeeper and converted a 45 in extra-time; Shea Leavy lined out a fullback; Oliver Keane missed out due to a leg injury and Colm Clinton was absent today due to vacation.
Congratulations to the lads and to all concerned on a significant title victory.
The day began with mass celebrated by Fr. Dan O’Mahony, former player and brother of the late John O’Mahony, who played alongside Ted for the Mayo team. All of Ted’s deceased team-mates and management from the Mayo Under 21 All-Ireland winning team of 1974 were remembered at this mass.
