Under-10s win Paddy Walsh Memorial Tournament
Our Under-10 boys squad started their weekend with a Go Games blitz on Saturday in Springfield. Teams from Killucan, Milltownpass and Bunbrosna provided the opposition and the boys got to displayed their skills and team play in front of a big crowd on a very busy morning in Springfield.
Ok Sunday, the group was in action again, this time in the prestigious and superbly organised Paddy Walsh Memorial Under-10 Tournament in The Downs. This was a really well run event by the host club, and another opportunity for the boys to compete against clubs from outside Westmeath, as they had done with aplomb in Naas earlier in the summer.
In the group stage, the boys saw off Killucan and St Paul’s in two competitive matches which set up a winner takes all match with Kilmacud Crokes which would determine who topped the group and went forward to the cup final. The play moved from end to end, there was super tackling and block downs from both teams and defences were on top in a low scoring game. Shamrocks took a narrow lead early in the second half and held on to emerge victorious.
The cup final was against a determined team from Carbury, who topped the other group beating the hosts and Ratoath on the way. However, the boys in green were not to be denied and put in a super display in what was a physical battle early on with both sets of players beginning to tire in their fourth outing. Shamrocks finished the first half two ahead. Halfway through the second half Carbury began to fade and the green and whites recorded their fourth victory of the day. Our thanks to Ed. Quinlan and The Downs and the Walsh family for the invitation to their tournament. The hospitality was superb and all 18 players got lots of game time.
This group has been active since last January and great credit goes to players and mentors for the commitment shown throughout the season. The hard work and consistent training has certainly paid off.
