Cathaoirleach Awards 2025 – Award for Mullingar Shamrocks

Mullingar Shamrocks were successful at the annual awards presented at Belvedere House on Friday night when the club was the recipient of one of the Age Friendly Recognition Awards 2025.

Mullingar Shamrocks were recognised for its embracing of the Sporting Memories initiative, a wonderful  Alzheimer’s Ireland programme which caters for people with the condition or dementia and their carers.  Mullingar Shamrocks are hosting a Sporting Memories workshop for club members and their families who will be invited to the clubhouse to re-engage with the Mullingar Shamrocks and be welcomed and valued as club members again.

This project is driven by our Healthy Club Officer, Joan Ormsby and we congratulate Joan on this recognition. It was great to have President Detty on hand to accept the award with Joan on Friday night which was presented by Ms. Anne Drury ,Chairperson, Westmeath Older Persons Council and Ms. Annette Barr Jordan, Westmeath Age Friendly Programme Manager.

Tom Hunt was a nominee in the Sports and Recreation section of the Cathaoirleach Awards which was won by Dermot Garvin, a most worthy winner. We congratulate this great clubman who has been at the centre of the St. Malachys GFC since its foundation in the 1960s. By the way, Dermot is a first cousin of our own Davy Gavin – obviously volunteerism is an integral part of the Gavin-Garvin, DNA.

The overall winner of the Cathaoirleach Award was another great GAA volunteer and a wonderful volunteer with several other community groups, Declan Leonard of the Clonkill Hurling Club Official. Well done Declan.
Declan’s philosophy should be noted … if you are part of a community make a contribution by volunteering.
